In its January crop report, USDA estimated a 2020-21 U.S. crop of 14.95 million bales. Upland production was estimated at 14.40 million bales and extra-long staple production at 552,000 bales.
Harvested area was an estimated 8.70 million acres, implying a non-harvested area of about 3.39 million acres. The resulting abandonment rate is about 28.04%. The national average yield per harvested acre was estimated to be about 825 pounds, 23 pounds less than the five-year average.
