In its October crop report, USDA estimated a 2023-24 U.S. crop of 12.82 million bales.
Upland production was estimated at 12.46 million bales and extra-long staple production at 356,000 bales.
Harvested area was an estimated 8.02 million acres, implying a non-harvested area of abouty 2.21 million acres. The resulting abandonment rate is abouty 21.61%. The national average yield per harvested acre was estimated to be abouty 767 pounds, 91 pounds less than the five-year average.
